pexels-kindel-media-7715238REDDING, CALIFORNIA (April 11, 2024) – A person has been injured in a Redding police shooting in the area of Cypress Avenue and Lowden Lane.

Redding police officials are saying that the incident took place around 4:20 p.m. on April 10. Police were called and had some type of altercation with a suspect before an officer-involved shooting took place.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the suspect. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center with unknown injuries.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Redding Police Shootings

Thousands of people are injured in police encounters each year in California. Many of these encounters involve suspects in the midst of a mental health crisis. According to the Treatment Advocacy Center, “The risk of being killed while being approached or stopped by law enforcement in the community is 16 times higher for individuals with untreated serious mental illness than for other civilians.” The police should take several steps in order to avoid police shootings.

  • The police should work to de-escalate encounters.
  • The police should determine if a suspect is taking medication.
  • The police should develop units trained for encounters with mentally ill suspects.
  • The police should rely on less-lethal measures first when force must be used.

The police have a great deal of leeway in how they conduct their jobs. But they are never permitted to use excessive force. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. It is important that certain steps be taken after any police shooting.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Body camera footage from all officers involved should be sought.
  • The actions of police officers leading up to a shooting should be understood.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Many police shootings are completely preventable. They often involve officers who are simply not willing or able to de-escalate encounters effectively. Sadly, though, police departments will often do everything in their power to avoid responsibility for the actions of their officers. When the police do investigate themselves, they will nearly always conclude that they did nothing wrong. Any person injured in a police shooting may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
