LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (October 24, 2024) – An 18-year-old teen has tragically died in a shooting with an undercover Los Angeles Police Department officer.

Los Angeles officials are saying that the incident took place in July. The teen was a Bay Area native and on vacation with his family.

He was in a group in a Cadillac heading down the Figeuroa Corridor. There was some type of dispute between the victim’s group and those in another vehicle.

An undercover officer later claimed that the victim’s group was wearing ski masks before an officer involved shooting occurred.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations For Los Angeles County Police Shootings

California has one of the highest instances of police shootings in the United States. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “About 195 people die each year from interactions with California law enforcement. Gunshots are by far the most common cause of death: nearly 250 people are shot by police each year.” Police officers should take a number of measures in order to avoid harming suspects.

  • Police officers should use de-escalation techniques.
  • Police officers should work to determine if a suspect was in the midst of a mental health crisis.
  • Police officers should be trained to follow a use of force continuum.

Police departments have a legal obligation to avoid needlessly harming suspects. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. It is important that certain steps are taken after any police shooting.

  • Body camera footage from all officers involved should be reviewed.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know where to begin after any instance of excessive force involving a police officer. Police departments will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if one of their officers kills a person. This is why it is so important that evidence is properly preserved. The family of any person who died in a police shooting may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
