pexels-ron-lach-10475008LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (July 16, 2024) – A 54-year-old woman has tragically died following some type of medical incident while in custody at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in LA County.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials are saying that the incident took place on Saturday. Correctional officers noticed that a woman was in medical distress.

Life-saving measures were taken before she was transported to the jail’s infirmary. But efforts to revive her were not successful.

She was later pronounced dead at the jail. Her cause of death was listed as a pulmonary embolism.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Heart illnesses remain a leading cause of inmate death in the United States. According to the Journal of American Cardiology, “Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death among individuals incarcerated, and those recently released have a higher risk of being hospitalized and dying of cardiovascular disease compared with the general population.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmates from dying of heart attacks and other illnesses.

  • Inmates should undergo a medical screening when they are first admitted.
  • Inmates should regularly see doctors during their stay.
  • Inmates should have access to medications that they may need.

Jails have a legal obligation to provide inmates with adequate care for all of their medical conditions. This is especially important for inmates who have heart conditions. These conditions can be fatal if left untreated. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. There are a number of signs that an inmate may be suffering from a cardiac event.

  • Chest pain
  • Upper body pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cold sweat
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Indigestion

Jails are often quick to label inmate deaths as “natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many deaths listed as natural in a jail setting involve some amount of medical neglect. Moreover, many of the supposedly natural deaths that take place involve people who are very young. The family of any person who died in a LA County jail may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
