Female Inmate Died From Suspected Methamphetamine Overdose At Los Angeles County Jail
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (September 15, 2024) – A 38-year-old female inmate has tragically died in custody from a suspected drug overdose at a Los Angeles County jail.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Saturday. Correctional officers noticed that a female inmate was in medical distress.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help her. She was taken to an Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital.
But efforts to revive her were not successful. Her suspected cause of death is methamphetamine toxicity.
Liability For Inmate Overdose Deaths
Drug overdoses remain a leading cause of inmate death in the United States. This is part of a broader trend. According to National Public Radio, “Even outside of prisons and jails, drug overdose deaths are at historic levels, according to federal data released on Wednesday. Last year, the nationwide death toll increased by nearly 30% from 2019. The devastating trend was driven by opioids, primarily illegal fentanyl.” Jails should take a number of measures in order to prevent inmate deaths.
- Jails should be stocked with Narcan, which can be used to reverse the effects of an overdose.
- Jail staff should be trained to recognize the signs of an overdose.
- Jails must ensure that inmates are medically cleared to be in jail in the first place.
All jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from foreseeable sources of harm. This includes providing inmates with all medically necessary care. When an inmate is showing signs of an overdose or drug abuse, they will typically need to undergo medical detoxification. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any inmate death.
- Medical records related to the death should be collected.
- An independent autopsy may need to be performed.
- The actions of jail officials leading up to the death should be understood.
Inmate deaths are often highly preventable. This is particularly true when an inmate dies due to an overdose. Part of the problem is that many jails in LA do not take adequate measures to prevent deadly drugs from entering inside. The family of any inmate who died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
