LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (February 19, 2025) – A 21-year-old inmate has tragically died after being held in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place early Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was in some type of serious medical distress.

He was transported to the intensive care unit of a Los Angeles County hospital. But his condition at the hospital continued to decline, and he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy report for the death is currently being created.

Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody every year. According to the UCLA Behind Bars Data Project, “The UCLA Law Behind Bars Data Project documented 6,182 deaths in 2020 compared to 4,240 deaths in 2019, despite a 10% drop in the U.S. prison population year-to-year.” There are a number of potential causes of inmate death.

  • Cancer
  • Suicide
  • Homicide
  • Heart attack
  • Drug overdose

Jails have a legal obligation to protect all of the inmates in their care. These inmates must receive reasonably adequate medical care for all of their health conditions. Failing to give inmates proper care for their health conditions is considered a form of cruel and unusual punishment and therefore prohibited. There are a number of ways that a jail may have failed to properly address or care for an inmate’s medical needs.

  • A jail may failed to give an inmate the medication that they needed.
  • A jail may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.
  • A jail may have failed to help an inmate going through an overdose.

It can be hard to know where to begin after losing someone in jail custody. To make matters worse, jails are often quick to deny responsibility for these deaths. They may claim that some inmate death was natural. But the fact of the matter is that a lot of deaths categorized as natural involve people who are very young. In reality, many of these deaths involve some amount of medical neglect.
