hospitalOakland — Former NFL running back Doug Martin has died at the age of 36 after suffering an unspecified medical emergency in the custody of Oakland Police. Martin was taken into custody in the early morning hours of October 18, 2025,  following police response to a reported break-in, was observed having a medical emergency, and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Incident Details

Officers from the Oakland Police Department responded at approximately 4:15 a.m. to a residential break-in call on the 11000 block of Ettrick Street in the Chabot Parks / East Oakland area. Simultaneously, dispatchers received a report that the person involved in the incident was experiencing a medical emergency. Upon arrival, officers located Martin inside the residence. As officers attempted to detain him, Martin allegedly resisted.

After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive. Paramedics arrived and transported him to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The cause of death has not been officially determined.

Multiple oversight entities—including the OPD Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland Police Commission, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office—are investigating.

Legal & Custodial Considerations

  • The fact that Martin died while in police custody triggers obligations under California law and U.S. constitutional protections:
    • Under the Fourteenth Amendment, detainees are protected from “deliberate indifference” to serious medical needs while in custody.
    • The use of force—or even the failure to properly handle a medical emergency—may give rise to civil rights claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 if constitutional standards are violated.
  • Key questions that will shape the investigation include:
    • Was the medical emergency identified and responded to appropriately and timely?
    • Did any use of force or restraint contribute to the outcome?
    • Were proper monitoring protocols followed while Martin was in custody?

Seeking Accountability For In-Custody Deaths

For families of individuals who die in custody, or for advocates assisting such families, consider these steps:

  1. Immediately request the incident’s public records, including arrest reports, medical evaluation records, body-worn camera footage, and internal investigation logs.
  2. Obtain the coroner’s autopsy and toxicology reports as soon as they are released.
  3. Review whether proper medical screening, prison cell checks, and emergency protocols were followed.
  4. Consult an attorney experienced in in-custody death and civil rights cases to assess potential claims under 42 U.S Code 1983 or wrongful death statutes.
