Alameda County officials are saying that the collision took place around 5:15 p.m. on Friday. A Chrysler was traveling southbound on International Boulevard at an unknown speed when it hit a Toyota making a left turn onto 54th Avenue.

The Chrysler then crossed a raised center median before colliding with the bus. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims.

A total of 14 people were injured in the crash, and 10 people were taken to the hospital. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Oakland Bus Accidents

Thousands of people are injured every year in bus accidents. According to the NTSB, “despite the strong safety record of buses … there were more than 250 people killed and 20,000 injured in bus-related crashes in 2009. From 2000-2007, there were 1,093 fatal accidents involving large buses, resulting in 1,315 fatalities and 3,471 injuries.” Bus companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent bus accidents.

  • Bus companies should ensure that their drivers are properly trained and qualified.
  • Bus companies should make sure that all of their vehicles are regularly inspected and well-maintained.
  • Bus companies should take measures to ensure that their drivers are not fatigued during their routes.

Bus companies are considered “common carriers,” and their drivers are held to a high standard. According to the Judicial Council of California Civil Jury Instructions, “Common carriers must use the highest care and the vigilance of a very cautious person. They must do all that human care, vigilance, and foresight reasonably can do under the circumstances to avoid harm to passengers [or property].” Many bus accidents involve drivers who commit traffic infractions, including making dangerous left turns.

If a bus driver was working at the time of a collision, their employer could be held at fault. In general, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees, insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. For example, a bus driver may have been transporting passengers when they crashed. It is important that certain steps are taken after any bus accident.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • The police report for the crash should be reviewed.
  • An experienced bus accident attorney should be contacted.

It can be hard to know what to do after a bus accident. Victims often suffer very serious injuries and may need to take extensive time off of work. It is also common for them to be left with high medical bills. This is why it is so important for accident victims to understand their rights. Any person who is injured in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
