San Luis Obispo – 59-year-old Brent Michael Perucca of San Luis Obispo died in custody of the San Luis Obispo County Jail on May 25, 2025. Perucca had been in custody since May 23, 2025.
Background of the Incident
Prior to his booking, Perucca was taken to a hospital for medical clearance due to chronic long-term health issues. After several hours of extensive testing and examination, he was booked into the County Jail at approximately 6:00 PM. During a cell check, Perucca was found in medical distress. Despite life-saving efforts administered by custody and nursing staff, Perucca was pronounced dead by paramedics around 4:30 PM.
An autopsy was performed the following morning, with results pending. Authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected at this time.
Legal Considerations and Inmate Rights
Inmates have the right to adequate medical care under the Eighth Amendment, which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. Failure to provide necessary medical attention can lead to legal consequences for correctional facilities and their staff.
