Fourth Inmate Died At Men’s Central Jail In The Living Area of The Los Angeles County Jail
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 15, 2024) – A 59-year-old man has tragically died while in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles County.
Los Angeles County officials say that the incident took place on August 13. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in need of medical aid.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. Despite life-saving measures, the inmate was later pronounced dead.
Liability For Los Angeles County In Custody Deaths
Thousands of inmates die in custody every year in the United States. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “A total of 4,234 persons died in state and federal prisons in 2019, a 6.6% decrease from the 4,515 deaths in 2018 reported to the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ (BJS) Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program) data collection.” There are many different causes of inmate deaths.
- Suicide
- Homicide
- Cancer
- Excessive force
- Overdoses
There could be numerous sources of liability for any instance in which an inmate dies in custody in California. For example, a jail or private healthcare provider could be held responsible. There are constitutional standards that must be met with respect to the healthcare that inmates must receive. If a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a constitutional claim. It is important that a thorough investigation be conducted after any inmate’s death.
- The history of inmate deaths at the institution should be understood.
- The cause of the death should be determined.
- The actions of correctional officers leading up to the death should be understood.
Many inmate deaths are completely preventable. This is particularly true when a death is due to an overdose or homicide. Unfortunately, jails will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if an inmate in their care dies. This is why it is so important to seek legal counsel as early as possible after any in-custody death. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
