SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (January 15, 2025) – A man has tragically died after a police shooting with San Diego County Sheriff’s Office officials at an apartment complex at 1150 East Street.

San Diego County officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:54 p.m. on January 13. A man called police dispatch after discovering that his roommate may have attempted suicide.

Police were called to the scene. They ended up evacuating 6 people out of the apartment.

After those people left, officers confronted the subject who was allegedly armed with a knife. Officers ordered the man to drop the knife.

At some point later, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the man.

He was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, where he was later pronounced dead. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Legal Considerations for San Diego Police Shootings

California has one of the highest instances of police shootings. Many of the victims were in the midst of a mental health crisis. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “More than four in ten people treated for non-fatal gunshot wounds from a police encounter were diagnosed with a mental health condition, an alcohol- or substance-related disorder, or both.” Police departments should take a number of measures in order to prevent shootings.

  • Police officers should be trained to de-escalate encounters.
  • Police departments should have divisions that specialize in mental health calls.
  • Police officers should have less lethal options like tasers.

Police officers must always use the least amount of force necessary for any given situation. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. It is important that certain steps are taken after any police shooting.

  • Body camera footage from all officers involved should be reviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • The actions of officers leading up to the shooting should be understood.

If a police officer kills a person in California, courts will consider the circumstances leading up to the death in order to determine if the use of force was reasonable. Even if a particular use of force seemed reasonable when viewed in isolation, it may not have been given all of the facts. It is important for victims to understand that they do have rights. The family of any person who dies due to the excessive force of police officers may have recourse through a civil claim.
