Incident Details

Upon arrival, they encountered a woman who allegedly approached them with a knife. One of the deputies fired their weapon, striking the woman. She would be taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Investigations and Legal Considerations
California law provides guidelines for the use of force by law enforcement officers, particularly when responding to individuals in crisis. Under California Assembly Bill 392, officers may only use deadly force when it is “necessary” to defend against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury. The law also emphasizes de-escalation strategies when feasible.
Police Shootings and Mental Health Concerns
Cases involving individuals allegedly armed with knives often raise concerns about law enforcement’s handling of mental health crises. A 2022 study by the Treatment Advocacy Center found that individuals with severe mental illness are 16 times more likely to be killed during police encounters than those without.
