LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (August 15, 2024) – A 25-year-old inmate has tragically died while in custody at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on August 11. Correctional officers noticed that an inmate was in some type of medical distress.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the inmate. But the efforts to save him were not successful. The inmate was later pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths

Los Angeles County has a particularly bad track record with respect to the care that inmates are given. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “People are chained to tables by jail staff, endure filthy living conditions, and sometimes do not even receive clothing. The county has also failed to adequately staff its jails with mental health care providers; in February 2023, 44 percent of jail mental health staff positions were vacant.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to inmate deaths.

  • When jails are overcrowded, this can lead to conflicts among inmates.
  • When jails are understaffed, inmates may not get the care that they need.
  • When jails don’t have Narcan, inmates are more likely to die from an overdose.

All jails have a legal obligation to provide inmates with reasonably adequate medical care. This must begin when an inmate is first admitted. They should be medically cleared. Unfortunately, though, many people are booked into jails with outstanding medical issues or conditions that may contribute to their deaths. For example, many inmates have died due to preventable drug overdoses. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any inmate’s death.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be collected.
  • The autopsy report should be reviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.

Jails are often quick to claim that inmate deaths are ‘natural.” But the fact of the matter is that many inmate deaths are preventable and involve some amount of medical neglect. This could include instances where jails fail to perform periodic wellness checks. The family of any inmate who died in custody may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
