Investigation Underway After Male Inmate Died Following Medical Emergency at LA County Jail
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (November 30, 2024) – A 60-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody after a medical emergency while at a Los Angeles County jail.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place on Tuesday. Correctional officers noticed that the inmate was in some type of serious medical distress.
The inmate was taken to the Los Angeles General Medical Center in order to receive care. But doctors and medical staff were not able to save him. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital due to organ failure.
Legal Considerations for Los Angeles County Inmate Deaths
Far too many inmates have died in Los Angeles County. According to the Vera Institute of Justice, “The death toll in LA jails—the nation’s largest jail system—is driven by severe overcrowding, pervasive neglect and mistreatment, inadequate care inside jails, and a failure to offer robust alternatives to incarceration.” Inmates across LA have been subjected to numerous forms of mistreatment over the years.
- Inmates have been attacked by jail staff and other inmates.
- Inmates have been deprived of needed medications.
- Inmates have not gotten the mental healthcare they require.
When a person is placed into custody, certain constitutional standards will apply. They must get adequate medical care. Failing to give inmates adequate care is considered a form of cruel and unusual punishment and therefore unconstitutional. A number of different factors could contribute to an inmate’s death.
- Jail staff may have failed to give an inmate a health screening.
- Jails may not have Narcan, which can be used to reverse an overdose.
- Jails may have failed to take an inmate to the hospital in a timely manner.
Jails are often quick to say that the death of some inmate in their care was due to natural factors. But a number of studies have revealed that many of these supposedly natural deaths involved some amount of medical neglect. This is why it is so important that the factors that may have contributed to any inmate death are properly understood.
