Hesperia, CA — A disturbing video has surfaced showing a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputy repeatedly punching a 14-year-old boy in the head during a violent encounter in Hesperia. The incident, which took place on April 9, 2025, has sparked outrage from the community and renewed calls for accountability within law enforcement.
Incident Details
The incident occurred just after 4:00 p.m. in the 10100 block of Third Avenue, roughly a mile and a half away from Hesperia Junior High School. Officials state that a deputy was on the scene to investigate a report of a student bringing a firearm to school. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy sought to question a group of juveniles alleged to have a firearm. When one of the juveniles walked away, the deputy made a move to detain him, and a struggle ensued. Bystander video footage shows the deputy pulling the teen towards him and punching the teenager multiple times in the head while attempting to detain him. The teen would be cuffed and taken into custody.
No gun was found at the scene, though a knife was recovered from one of the other teens.
Excessive Force and Minors: A Troubling Pattern
This is not the first time law enforcement in Southern California has faced scrutiny for aggressive treatment of minors. Studies show that young people of color are disproportionately subjected to force by police officers. According to the California Department of Justice, use-of-force incidents involving juveniles have remained a persistent issue, with Black and Latino youth more likely to experience police force than their white peers.
Excessive force by law enforcement against minors may violate their Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures. Victims and their families may pursue legal action under 42 U.S. Code § 1983, which allows individuals to seek damages when their constitutional rights are violated by government officials, including police officers.
